Panna National Park is a located in the Chhatarpur region of Madhya Pradesh at a distance of 38 km from Khajuraho. It covers an area of about 1,406 sq km and was awarded for being the best maintained national park in the year 2007 by the government of India.

The tiger population of Panna has almost become extinct today due to increase in poaching by humans. However, the government of India has taken up the challenge to rebuild the tiger population of this reserve through the Project Tiger campaign.

The climatic condition of the park is tropical. Summers are sometime scorching; nevertheless it is the best time when you can get to see the exotic wildlife of the park.

Panna National Park is also famous worldwide for its diamond mining industry. 




Fauna in Panna National Park

Diverse species of animals in & around the park can be found. Panna has good Tiger population besides Panther, Sambhar, Blue bull (Neelgai), Antelope, Chinkara, Bear, Spotted deer, Wolf, Wild dog, Jackal, Monkey & other mammals. The park is also home to a variety of reptiles such as snakes & lizards and amphibians like frogs, Crocodiles and Gharials.

Panna houses more than 200 varieties of birds including a host of seasonal birds. Bird watchers can easily spot the Honey Buzzard, white necked stork, the Bar-headed Goose, the King Vulture, the Blossom-headed Parakeet, Paradise flycatcher and Scimitar babbler amongst others.

Hot and dry climate along with the presence of shallow Vindhyan soils has given rise to dry forest in Panna natural reserve. Besides tall grasses and thorny woodlands the park has variety of trees like Saja, Salai, Tendu, Achar, Kullu, Seja, Aonla, Mahua, Bel and others

Some characteristic floral plants of this area include Diospyros melanoxylon, Madhuca indica, Tectona grandis, Buchnania latifolia, Lannea coromandelica, Anogeissus pendula, Anogeissus latifolia and Bosswelia serrata.
